A woman from Gloucestershire thought she had hit the jackpot when her online slot machine displayed a win of £1 million. But the joy was short-lived after bookmaking company Paddy Power claimed it was a “display malfunction” and offered her less than 2% of the payout.
It was a typical evening of slot play for Corrine Durber last October when her screen flashed a “Monster Jackpot” message and a staggering £1.09 million amount. We can only imagine the surprise and elation. But shortly afterward, Paddy Power officials denied the monumental award and deposited around £20,000 into her account instead.
Rightly furious, Durber got the lawyer and hauled the Irish bookies before a court. She contended that they failed their side of the bargain by failing to pay out the full shown on the screen. However, Paddy Power claimed the slot machine random number generator (RNG) had operated correctly and that the Mega Jackpot was just an error.
Earlier this week, the High Court ruled in Durber’s favour. Customers can fairly assume that payouts will be based on what’s displayed on screen. The judge said the casino had to pay out the jackpot to the lady.
Paddy Power confirmed the ruling. They say that the platform constantly strives to provide the best possible customer experience and pride themselves on fairness.
